2012, the Kyrgyz Traditional Art of making felt carpets was inscribed into the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. "Traditional felt carpets represent one of the foremost arts of the Kyrgyz people. Their creation is a communal enterprise led by women in rural, mountainous areas, who keep the know-how about the ornaments and the treatment of felt. Espacially today, in a period of change, it is of big importance to protect such an old and original handicraft.
Kyrgyzstan has a continental climate, which means acute differences in temperature throughout the year. No wonder that the best felt worldwide is manufactured here. Felt is the simplest, loveliest and most effective material for balancing the temperature indoors – felt has both a warming and cooling effect.
